The shape of the work

Raadhika Sarathkumar acted in every film; Senthamarai acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Moondru Mugam (1982), almost didn't happen. Director A. Jagannathan wanted a different actress for the role opposite Rajinikanth, but Raadhika pushed for Senthamarai to be cast as her on-screen mother. She told the press later that she 'felt safe' with Senthamarai's presence.
  • In Metti (1982), Senthamarai played a strict mother-in-law while Raadhika played the daughter-in-law. Senthamarai deliberately refused to smile in any of their scenes together, even off-camera, to keep Raadhika genuinely intimidated. Raadhika later said that Senthamarai's cold stare made her cry for real in the climax.
  • During the shoot of Anbulla Rajinikanth (1984), Senthamarai would bring homemade snacks for the entire crew every single day. Raadhika specifically requested that Senthamarai sit next to her in the vanity van during breaks, because she said Senthamarai's calm energy helped her focus between emotional scenes.
  • The disastrous Naan Ungal Rasigan (1985) — rated 1/10 — was the last time they played mother and daughter on screen. The film's failure directly led to Senthamarai taking a two-year break from cinema. Raadhika personally called producers to vouch for Senthamarai's comeback in Oorkavalan (1987).
  • Raadhika once said in a 1990s TV interview: 'Senthamarai amma never treated me like a co-star. She treated me like her real daughter. On the sets of Oorkavalan, she would scold me if I didn't eat my lunch properly.'
