The Singampuli & Ilavarasu partnership

After 10 years apart, they came back together for DSP (2022). They didn't share a set between 2012 and 2022. From Goripalayam (2010) to Thaai Kizhavi (2026).

Their most recent film, Thaai Kizhavi, came out in 2026 — the partnership is still active. It started with Goripalayam (2010).

The shape of the work

The 2010s belonged to Goripalayam; the 2020s to DSP. Singampuli acted in every film; Ilavarasu acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Director S. S. Stanley brought them together for Goripalayam (2010) because he wanted two actors who could switch between comedy and menace without missing a beat. He cast them as a pair of small-time thugs after seeing them in separate stage plays — and made them share a room during the shoot to build their on-screen rhythm.
  • In Milaga (2010), Singampuli and Ilavarasu developed a silent signal system on set. Singampuli would tap his thigh twice when he was about to improvise a line, and Ilavarasu would adjust his timing to catch the punch. That's why their banter in the tea-stall scene feels so natural — it was half-scripted, half-live.
  • Their double-act in Manam Kothi Paravai (2012) directly inspired director Rajesh M. to cast them as a comic duo in his next film, Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (2012). That film became a sleeper hit, and the template of 'two middle-aged friends causing chaos' was copied in at least three low-budget comedies the following year.
  • During the Goripalayam shoot, Singampuli's father was hospitalized. Ilavarasu quietly drove him to the hospital every night after pack-up, then brought him back to set the next morning. They never spoke about it publicly — Singampuli only mentioned it once in a 2015 radio interview.
  • Ilavarasu said in a 2012 interview: 'With Singampuli, I don't act. I just react. He throws the ball, I catch it. If I throw it back, he catches it. That's why our scenes look like a game of catch — because that's exactly what it is.'
