Partnership facts

• For Simla Special (1982), director S. P. Muthuraman paired Moorthy and Shekher after seeing them separately in stage plays. Moorthy was a veteran comedian, Shekher was a rising playwright. Muthuraman bet that their contrasting styles — Moorthy's deadpan, Shekher's manic energy — would click. It did.
• In Thangamana Purushan (1989), Moorthy played the straight man to Shekher's over-the-top husband. Shekher once said in an interview that Moorthy would deliberately pause his lines a beat longer than written, forcing Shekher to react faster — that push-and-pull made their comedy feel spontaneous.
• Shekher wrote the screenplay for Thangamana Purushan specifically to give Moorthy a meaty role. He later admitted he felt Moorthy was underused in mainstream cinema and wanted to showcase his timing. Moorthy never thanked him publicly — but he showed up on set without a script, trusting Shekher completely.
• The success of Simla Special (1982) directly led to Shekher getting his own solo comedy films as a lead. Before that, he was mostly a supporting writer-actor. Moorthy's willingness to share screen space gave Shekher the launchpad he needed.
• S. Ve. Shekher once told a magazine: 'Moorthy sir never laughed at his own jokes on set. He'd just look at me with that stone face. That silence made me work harder. He taught me that comedy is about the pause, not the punchline.'
• Their third and final film together, Thirupathi Ezhumalai Venkatesa (1999), was a disaster. Shekher later said they took the project only because the producer was a friend. Moorthy reportedly walked off set twice during shooting. They never worked together again.
