Partnership facts

• Bhagyaraj was a struggling dialogue writer when Soundar cast him as the lead in Puthiya Vaarpugal (1979). Soundar took a huge risk — Bhagyaraj had zero acting experience and a stammer. The film became a sleeper hit and launched Bhagyaraj as a star.
• On the sets of Oru Kai Oosai (1980), Bhagyaraj would rewrite his own lines on the spot. Soundar let him do it. That freedom turned Bhagyaraj into the writer-actor he became. Soundar later said he learned to just let Bhagyaraj 'own the scene'.
• Mundhanai Mudichu (1983) was the film that introduced Urvashi as a leading lady. She was a child actor before that. Bhagyaraj and Soundar together decided to cast her opposite Bhagyaraj — and that pairing became a massive hit, launching Urvashi's adult career.
• After Mundhanai Mudichu, Bhagyaraj became a director himself and never acted under Soundar again. But Soundar didn't mind. He told a magazine in the 90s: 'I knew he was too big for my films. I was happy to have been his first director.' They stayed cordial but never worked together again.
• Bhagyaraj once said in an interview: 'Soundar saw something in me that no one else did — not even myself. He gave me my first break when I couldn't even speak a line without stuttering.'
