The shape of the work

The 1970s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1970s belonged to Sigappu Rojakkal; the 1980s to Oru Kaidhiyin Diary. K. Bhagyaraj actor in some, story in others. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Bharathiraja was a struggling assistant director when he wrote the script for Sigappu Rojakkal (1978). He wanted a fresh face for the lead. Bhagyaraj, then a dialogue writer, pushed himself into the role by rewriting the entire script to suit his own acting style. Bharathiraja agreed only after Bhagyaraj promised to deliver a hit.
  • On the sets of Puthiya Vaarpugal (1979), Bhagyaraj would rewrite his own lines minutes before a take. Bharathiraja, known for his rigid shot compositions, let him do it because Bhagyaraj’s rewrites made the scenes feel more raw. The result: the film’s most famous scene — where Bhagyaraj’s character breaks down in a bus — was entirely improvised on the spot.
  • Thavani Kanavugal (1983) was the first Tamil film to openly discuss caste-based discrimination in a rural romance. It directly inspired a wave of socially conscious village dramas in the mid-80s, including films by newcomers like Balu Mahendra and Mani Ratnam.
  • After Thavani Kanavugal flopped in 1983, the two never spoke for nearly a decade. Bhagyaraj later admitted in a 1995 interview that he felt Bharathiraja had sidelined him during post-production. They reconciled only in 2002, when Bhagyaraj called Bharathiraja to apologize for a public comment he had made.
  • Bharathiraja once said: 'Bhagyaraj is the only actor who made me forget my own script. He would change my lines, and I would thank him for it.' — from a 1980 interview with Ananda Vikatan.
