• Mahesh Manjrekar cast Namrata Shirodkar in Vaastav after seeing her in a music video. He thought she had the right mix of innocence and steel for the role of a gangster's wife.
• On the sets of Vaastav, Manjrekar would deliberately push Namrata into uncomfortable emotional spaces before a scene. He told her to think of her own family's struggles to get the raw, teary-eyed anger he wanted.
