The Manivannan & S. A. Chandrasekhar partnership

Between 1995 and 1999, they barely worked apart — 4 films in 4 years. For 4 years, a Manivannan–S. film arrived almost every year. From Deva (1995) to Nenjinile (1999).

The unfolded closed with Nenjinile in 1999. It started with Deva (1995).

The shape of the work

Never on the same side of the camera — Manivannan actor, S. A. Chandrasekhar director, across all 4 films. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Chandrasekhar was a struggling assistant director when Manivannan, already a star writer, spotted him at a film set and told him, 'You have the hunger. Come write with me.' That chance meeting led to Chandrasekhar co-writing Manivannan's early hits before they turned directors themselves.
  • On the sets of 'Deva' (1995), Manivannan would rewrite Chandrasekhar's dialogue on the spot — but only after making sure Chandrasekhar wasn't looking. Chandrasekhar later admitted he'd deliberately leave gaps in the script because he knew Manivannan's rewrites were always sharper.
  • During the shoot of 'Maanbumigu Maanavan' (1996), the two had a screaming match over a scene's climax. They didn't speak for three days. Then Manivannan showed up at Chandrasekhar's house at 2 AM with a bottle of whiskey and said, 'Finish the film first. Fight later.' They never fought again.
  • The only reason 'Nenjinile' (1999) exists is because Manivannan bet Chandrasekhar that he couldn't make a romantic film without a single fight sequence. Chandrasekhar took the bet, made the film — and it bombed. But the bet itself became a legendary story in Kollywood circles, inspiring younger directors to try genre-switches.
  • Manivannan once said about Chandrasekhar: 'He is the only director who can make a hero cry without making him look weak. I learned that from him.' Chandrasekhar later repeated this line in a 2005 interview, calling it the best compliment he ever received.
