The Manivannan & Nagesh partnership

Between 1996 and 2000, they barely worked apart — 4 films in 4 years. For 4 years, a ManivannanNagesh film arrived almost every year. From Avvai Shanmughi (1996) to Rhythm (2000).

The unfolded closed with Rhythm in 2000. It started with Avvai Shanmughi (1996).

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Avvai Shanmughi; the 2000s to Rhythm. Manivannan acted in every film; Nagesh acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Kamal Haasan personally requested Nagesh to come out of retirement for Avvai Shanmughi (1996). Nagesh had stopped acting after a stroke. Manivannan was already cast as the villain. Kamal wanted Nagesh to play the comedic priest — and Nagesh agreed only because Manivannan was on set to keep the energy light.
  • In Poochudava (1997), Manivannan and Nagesh played father and son. Manivannan deliberately slowed his delivery to match Nagesh’s post-stroke speech rhythm. Nagesh later told a magazine that Manivannan ‘adjusted his timing like a drummer following a limping dancer.’
  • Their only non-Kamal Haasan film together, Desiya Geetham (1998), was the first Tamil film to cast a real-life father-son duo (Manivannan and his son) opposite a legendary comedy pair. That son — actor-director — later credited watching Manivannan and Nagesh rehearse as the reason he got into cinema.
  • On the sets of Avvai Shanmughi, Nagesh would nap between shots. Manivannan would sit beside him and fan him with a newspaper. The crew thought it was a bit — but Manivannan said Nagesh’s health was fragile and he wanted him to rest. They never discussed it. It just became a ritual.
  • Manivannan once said in an interview: ‘Nagesh sir taught me that comedy is not about making people laugh. It’s about making them forget their pain for two hours. I learned that watching him on Avvai Shanmughi sets.’
