• Manivannan was already a well-known character actor when he cast Ambika as the lead in Ambigai Neril Vanthaal (1984). But here's the twist: he didn't just direct her — he also played her romantic interest. That film marked the first time a director-actress pair became a full-on on-screen couple in Tamil cinema.
• In Makkal En Pakkam (1987), Manivannan wrote a scene where his character had to slap Ambika's character. He couldn't bring himself to do it. So Ambika told him, 'Just do it, or the scene won't work.' He did it in one take, then walked off set for ten minutes. That's how much he respected her.
• Their 2001 film Piriyadha Varam Vendum was a sleeper hit that directly inspired a wave of 'older hero-younger heroine' love stories in early 2000s Tamil cinema. Directors like K. Balachander and later Selvaraghavan cited this film's emotional tone as a reference point.

• In Jothi (2022), their final film together, Manivannan was 68 and Ambika was 60. They played a married couple dealing with dementia. Ambika later revealed that Manivannan forgot his lines multiple times due to his own health issues — so she fed him his cues under her breath, and the crew kept rolling.
