• Bharathiraja didn't want to cast his own son Manoj in 'Taj Mahal' (1999). He thought it would look like nepotism. Manoj had to audition multiple times and prove he could cry on cue before his dad finally said yes.
• On the set of 'Kadal Pookkal' (2001), Bharathiraja would deliberately not give Manoj any dialogue rehearsal. He wanted the raw, first-take confusion in his son's eyes. Manoj later said that method made him a better actor because he had to react, not perform.
• The only reason 'Annakodi' (2013) got made was because Manoj convinced his father to adapt a real-life village feud he had witnessed. That film later inspired a minor trend in Tamil cinema — two other directors approached Bharathiraja asking for similar raw village scripts.
• During the shoot of 'Eera Nilam' (2003), Manoj and Bharathiraja had a massive argument on set about a scene's emotional tone. They didn't speak for three days. Manoj eventually broke the silence by bringing his dad a cup of filter coffee — their unspoken peace ritual on every film after that.
• Manoj once told a behind-the-scenes crew: 'My father is the only director who can make me forget I'm his son. On set, he treats me worse than any newcomer. That's why I trust him.'
• In 'Margazhi Thingal' (2023), Bharathiraja let Manoj improvise an entire 8-minute monologue about loss. The director had written only three lines. Manoj's extended version became the film's most talked-about scene, and Bharathiraja admitted he 'learned to let go of the script' because of his son.
