Trivia
- The film's title 'Taj Mahal' was chosen as a metaphor for an eternal, unattainable love, similar to the monument's story.
- This was one of the few films where director Bharathiraja cast a relatively fresh pair, Prashanth and Ramba, in the lead roles.
- A major action sequence was filmed at the real Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, requiring special permission.
- The song 'Kadhal Vandhuchu' became a hit, but its filming faced delays due to monsoon rains disrupting the outdoor schedule.
- The movie underperformed at the box office, which was unexpected given Bharathiraja's strong track record with romantic dramas.
- Actor Vivek's comedy track was added later during scripting to provide relief from the intense romantic plot.
- The climax scene involving a train was shot using a combination of a real locomotive and a set to ensure safety.
