• Selvaraghavan originally wanted someone else for the lead in Kadhal Kondein (2003). Dhanush, then just a teenager with zero box-office pull, literally begged for the role. The director gave him a screen test on the spot — and changed both their careers overnight.
• On the sets of Pudhupettai (2006), Selvaraghavan would push Dhanush into a corner and scream at him for hours before a scene. He wanted that raw, cornered-animal energy for the character Kokki Kumar. Dhanush later said those shouting sessions were the only way he could find the rage.
• Dhanush and Selvaraghavan are brothers-in-law. Selvaraghavan is married to Dhanush's sister. So every film they made together was literally a family affair — arguments on set would get settled at Sunday lunch.
• Pudhupettai (2006) directly inspired the 2018 Hindi gangster film Gali Guleiyan. Director Qaushiq Mukherjee has openly said he watched Pudhupettai multiple times to study how Selvaraghavan shot claustrophobic urban spaces.
• Selvaraghavan once said: 'Dhanush is the only actor who can make my madness look believable. If I write a character who talks to a wall for ten minutes, he'll find a way to make you cry.'
• For Mayakkam Enna (2011), Selvaraghavan deliberately cast Dhanush against his usual loud, street-smart image. He made him play a quiet, obsessive photographer. Dhanush had to unlearn every mannerism from Pudhupettai — and Selvaraghavan would cut the camera mid-scene if he slipped back into 'Kokki Kumar' mode.
