The Suseenthiran & Harish Uthaman partnership

Between 2014 and 2022, they barely worked apart — 9 films in 8 years. 2022 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 8 years, a Suseenthiran–Harish film arrived almost every year.

They saved their best for last — Sivudu (6.8/10) came 8 years in. From Jeeva (2014) to Sivudu (2022).

The shape of the work

The 2010s belonged to Jeeva; the 2020s to Sivudu. Never on the same side of the camera — Suseenthiran director, Harish Uthaman actor, across all 9 films. Mostly Tamil, with 2 films in Telugu.

Partnership facts

  • Suseenthiran didn't initially cast Harish Uthaman in 'Jeeva' (2014). He saw Harish in a small role in 'Soodhu Kavvum' and called him for a different part. Harish walked in, read the villain's lines on a whim, and Suseenthiran stopped the audition right there — 'You're the villain.' That one reading locked their first film together.
  • On the set of 'Maaveeran Kittu' (2016), Suseenthiran realized Harish couldn't do subtle menace — he was too loud. So the director made him underplay every single scene. Harish later said Suseenthiran literally held his shoulder before each take and whispered 'less face, more eyes.' That restraint became Harish's signature villain style in later films.
  • Their 2022 film 'Kuttram Kuttrame' directly launched a new trend in Tamil crime thrillers — the 'single-location interrogation' format. After its strong reception, at least three low-budget Tamil films in 2023-24 copied the premise of two characters trapped in a room unraveling a crime. Suseenthiran and Harish accidentally created a mini-genre.
  • Between films, Suseenthiran and Harish have a standing ritual: every time they meet, Harish has to narrate one new joke he's heard. If the joke doesn't make Suseenthiran laugh, Harish buys him coffee. If it does, Suseenthiran buys. Harish claims he's 'in debt by about 40 coffees' as of 2023.
  • Harish Uthaman, on why he keeps saying yes to Suseenthiran: 'He is the only director who calls me and says 'I have a role, but you'll have to shave your head and gain 8 kilos in three weeks.' And I do it. Because I know he'll use every kilo on screen.' Said during the promotions of 'Sivudu' (2022).
