• For 'Apne Paraye' (1980), director Basu Chatterjee wanted a fresh pair. He cast Karnad and Azmi together because both were known for naturalistic acting — no melodrama, just real people. Karnad later said he agreed the moment he heard Azmi was on board.
• In 'Shama' (1981), a musical drama, Azmi’s character was the emotional anchor while Karnad’s was the brooding romantic lead. Azmi deliberately underplayed her scenes to let Karnad’s theatrical training shine — she once told a journalist she 'fed him the lines' in their close-ups.
• Karnad and Azmi were close friends off-screen. During the shoot of 'Antarnaad' (1991), Karnad would often drive Azmi home after late-night shoots in Bombay, and they’d stop for chai at a stall near Juhu. Azmi later recalled those drives as 'the only time we talked about life, not cinema.'
• Shabana Azmi once said about Girish Karnad: 'He was the only co-star who could match me beat for beat in a silence. We didn’t need dialogue to tell the story.' She said this in a 1992 interview with Filmfare.
• Their third film together, 'Antarnaad' (1991), was a rare Hindi film about marital rape — a subject almost never touched in mainstream Indian cinema at the time. The film directly inspired a generation of feminist filmmakers, including Deepa Mehta, who cited it as a reference for 'Fire' (1996).
