• Bhansali cast Salman in Khamoshi: The Musical (1996) after seeing him in a small role in a film called 'Chandramukhi' — Salman was not yet a superstar, and Bhansali was a first-time director. Salman agreed to do the film for free because he believed in the script.
• On the sets of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Bhansali would make Salman rehearse a single line 30 times until the emotion was exactly right. Salman, known for his spontaneous style, later said Bhansali taught him 'the value of silence in a scene'.
