• Ambika was the bigger star when they first worked together in Tharaasu (1984). She was coming off back-to-back hits. K. R. Vijaya was the veteran who had already acted in over 200 films. The director paired them specifically to give Vijaya a younger, commercially viable co-star — and it worked.
• In Raja Rishi (1985), K. R. Vijaya played the older, wiser queen while Ambika played the younger, impulsive princess. Vijaya deliberately slowed down her dialogue delivery in their scenes together so Ambika's character could react first — a trick she used to make Ambika's performance look more spontaneous.
• During the shoot of Velundu Vinaiyillai (1987), Ambika was going through a personal crisis. K. R.
