The Amitabh Bachchan & Vinod Mehra partnership

After 12 years apart, they came back together for Insaniyat (1994). They didn't share a set between 1982 and 1994. Their work runs across 3 decades of Hindi cinema.

From Jurmana (1979) to Insaniyat (1994). It started with Jurmana (1979).

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Jurmana; the 1990s to Insaniyat. Amitabh Bachchan acted in every film; Vinod Mehra acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They first shared screen space in Jurmana (1979) because Amitabh insisted on casting Vinod Mehra as his younger brother. The director, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, initially wanted a different actor for the role, but Amitabh pushed for Mehra, whom he had never worked with before.
  • In Bemisal (1982), Amitabh played the intense, righteous doctor while Vinod Mehra played the charming, morally flexible lawyer. The trick was that Mehra deliberately underplayed every scene opposite Amitabh’s booming delivery — making his character’s betrayal hit harder because he never matched Amitabh’s volume.
  • Vinod Mehra was one of the few co-stars Amitabh would call by his real name, 'Vinod,' on set. Most others got nicknames or formal addresses. They also shared a love for chess and would play between shots during the Khud-daar (1982) schedule.
  • Their last film together, Insaniyat (1994), was a disaster — but it directly led to Vinod Mehra’s final career move. After the film flopped, Mehra shifted to television production and created the hit show 'Shaktimaan,' which became India’s first superhero TV series. None of that happens if Insaniyat had been a success.
  • Vinod Mehra once said in an interview: 'Amitabh doesn't act with you — he acts at you. You have to learn to catch his energy and throw it back. I learned that on Jurmana.'
