The Amitabh Bachchan & Ramesh Sippy partnership

After 9 years apart, they came back together for Akayla (1991). They didn't share a set between 1982 and 1991. From Shaan (1980) to Akayla (1991).

Shakti is the one most viewers reach for. The played out closed with Akayla in 1991.

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Shakti; the 1990s to Akayla. Amitabh Bachchan acted in every film; Ramesh Sippy directed all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Sippy didn't want Bachchan for Shaan. He thought the actor was too young and lean to play the suave older brother. Bachchan convinced him by showing up to the meeting in a white suit and sunglasses — and stayed in character the whole time.
  • On Shakti, Sippy deliberately shot Bachchan and Dilip Kumar in separate frames for most of the film. He knew Bachchan would instinctively match Kumar's legendary pauses — so he told Bachchan to speed up his dialogue delivery. The result: two different acting rhythms that made their conflict scenes crackle.
  • Shaan's helicopter chase over a dam was the first time a Bollywood film used a real helicopter for an action sequence. Sippy and Bachchan pushed the stunt team to shoot without CGI — the actor hung from the skid 200 feet above water. That scene directly inspired the climax of the 1992 hit Khiladi.
  • After Akayla bombed, Sippy didn't call Bachchan for 15 years. The actor later said he thought Sippy blamed him for the film's failure. They finally reconciled in 2006 at a mutual friend's party — Sippy walked up and said, 'You were never the problem. I just didn't know how to make a film without Sholay's shadow.'
