• Govinda was already a rising star when Ilzaam (1986) was being cast. The director, Shibu Mitra, paired him with Raj Kiran because he wanted a contrast — Govinda's manic energy against Raj Kiran's brooding stillness. Raj Kiran was hesitant to take the role, but Govinda personally called him and said, 'Yeh film hum dono ki banegi.'
• On the sets of Hatya (1988), Govinda would deliberately overact in his first take so Raj Kiran would react with genuine irritation. Raj Kiran, in turn, would underplay his lines so hard that Govinda had to pull back his energy. They built a rhythm where one pushed, the other pulled — and the director kept the camera rolling on both.
• During the shoot of Dariya Dil (1988), Govinda and Raj Kiran shared a room in a small hotel in Ooty for three weeks. Raj Kiran would wake up at 5 AM to practice his lines alone, while Govinda slept till the last minute. Govinda later said Raj Kiran taught him how to read a script properly — by underlining every pause.
• Raj Kiran once told a trade magazine in 1991: 'Govinda is like a firecracker. I am the matchbox. Alone, neither of us makes much noise. Together, we light up the screen.' He said this right after Karz Chukana Hai released.
• Their pairing in Ilzaam (1986) directly inspired producer K.C. Bokadia to cast two male leads with opposite energies in his next film — which became the template for the 'hero vs hero' buddy formula in late-80s Hindi cinema. Films like Tridev and Ram Lakhan followed the same blueprint.
