• Govinda was a struggling newcomer when Shatrughan Sinha personally recommended him for Ilzaam (1986). The producer wanted a bigger name, but Shatrughan insisted Govinda had the comic timing to match his own loud style.
• In Khudgarz (1987), Shatrughan deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery so Govinda’s faster, more frantic energy could pop. Govinda later said Shatrughan would whisper “Ruk ja, mera time de” before every scene to let him take the lead.
• The success of Khudgarz (1987) directly led to the casting of Govinda in the 1990 blockbuster Awaargi — the director, Mahesh Bhatt, saw how Govinda held his own against Shatrughan’s thunder and decided to give him a solo lead.
• During the shoot of Aakhri Baazi (1989), Shatrughan would drive Govinda home every night because Govinda didn’t own a car yet. They’d stop at a roadside stall for chai and argue about cricket for an hour before calling it a night.
• “Shatrughan ji ne mujhe acting nahi, confidence diya. Woh kehte the, ‘Tu hero hai, mere saath bhi hero dikhega.’” (Shatrughan ji didn’t teach me acting, he gave me confidence. He used to say, ‘You are a hero, even next to me you’ll look like a hero.’)
