• Senthil was a popular comedian by 1986, but K. Rangaraj was a debutant director. Rangaraj took a huge risk casting Senthil as the lead in 'Uyire Unakkaga' — it was Senthil's first-ever film as a solo hero, not a sidekick.
• On the sets of 'Gramathu Minnal' (1987), Rangaraj realized Senthil could do more than make people laugh. He deliberately wrote a dramatic climax where Senthil had to cry without dialogue — and Senthil nailed it in one take. That scene convinced Rangaraj to push Senthil into serious roles.
• Their third film 'Dharmam Vellum' (1989) was the first Tamil movie to feature a then-unknown actress named Khushbu in a supporting role. She went on to become a massive star — and she got that break because Senthil recommended her to Rangaraj after seeing her in a stage play.
• Rangaraj and Senthil had a standing bet on every film: if the movie ran for 100 days, Rangaraj would cook Senthil a full Kerala-style meal at home. 'Uyire Unakkaga' ran 125 days — and Rangaraj kept his word, cooking for the entire crew.
