• Charlie was a stage actor with zero film experience when R. Sundarrajan cast him in Mella Thirandhathu Kadhavu (1986). Sundarrajan saw him in a play and offered the role on the spot — no audition, no screen test.
• Sundarrajan wrote Charlie's dialogue in a specific rhythm — long, winding sentences that only Charlie could deliver without breaking breath. In Thazhuvatha Kaigal (1986), Charlie's monologue in the climax was shot in one take because Sundarrajan refused to cut it.
• After Gandhi Pirantha Mann (1995) flopped, Sundarrajan didn't call Charlie for a decade. Charlie later said in an interview that he thought Sundarrajan was embarrassed by the film's failure. They only reconnected when a mutual friend forced them to have coffee in 2016.
• Pattinapakkam (2018) was their only hit together — and it was a deliberate throwback. Sundarrajan cast Charlie as a retired don specifically to remind audiences of their 80s collaborations. The film's title card read 'Reunited after 21 years'.
• In Kaalamellam Kaathiruppen (1997), Sundarrajan deliberately gave Charlie no dialogue for the first 20 minutes. He wanted the audience to read Charlie's emotions through his eyes alone. Charlie later said that was the hardest role Sundarrajan ever gave him.
