R. Sundarrajan and Radha Ravi appeared together in 7 Tamil films between 1984 and 2013. Their highest-rated collaboration was Vaidehi Kathirunthal (1984 — 7.5/10). Films span Vaidehi Kathirunthal (1984) through Chithirayil Nilachoru (2013).
The R. Sundarrajan & Radha Ravi partnership
After 18 years apart, they came back together for Chithirayil Nilachoru (2013). They didn't share a set between 1995 and 2013. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.
The work is uneven: Vaidehi Kathirunthal (7.5) at one end, En Aasai Machan (3.4) at the other. From Vaidehi Kathirunthal (1984) to Chithirayil Nilachoru (2013).
The shape of the work
The 1980s belonged to Vaidehi Kathirunthal; the 2010s to Chithirayil Nilachoru. R. Sundarrajan directed every film; Radha Ravi acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- R. Sundarrajan was already a successful director when he cast Radha Ravi in Vaidehi Kathirunthal (1984). But Radha Ravi wasn't his first choice — the role was originally offered to a bigger star who backed out last minute. Sundarrajan took a chance on Radha Ravi, and that film became the launchpad for both of them as a pair.
- In Amman Kovil Kizhakale (1986), Sundarrajan deliberately wrote scenes where Radha Ravi's character had to react silently — just with his eyes. Sundarrajan later said he did this because Radha Ravi's strength was micro-expressions, not loud dialogue. That film's climax, where Radha Ravi says nothing for three minutes, is still studied by acting students.
- En Kitta Mothathey (1990) was the film that directly inspired the trend of 'brother-sent-to-reform-sister' comedies in Tamil cinema. Years later, director K. S. Ravikumar admitted he rewatched this film before making his own hit, Muthu (1995). Without this Sundarrajan-Radha Ravi film, that whole sub-genre might not have existed.
- On the sets of En Aasai Machan (1994), Sundarrajan and Radha Ravi had a falling out over a script change. Radha Ravi walked off set for two days. Sundarrajan didn't call him — he just rewrote the scenes without him. They patched up only after the film's disastrous release, when Sundarrajan admitted the rewrite was a mistake.
- Chithirayil Nilachoru (2013) was their last film together — and it was a comeback of sorts. Sundarrajan hadn't directed in 18 years. Radha Ravi convinced him to return, even producing the film himself. It flopped, but it's the only reason these two worked together again after nearly two decades.
