• J.P. Dutta cast Abhishek in LOC Kargil (2003) after seeing his work in Refugee. But Abhishek almost didn't play the role of Lt. Vikram Batra — Dutta initially thought he was too young and soft. Abhishek convinced him by showing up to the meeting with a shaved head and a military posture he'd practiced for weeks.
• On Umrao Jaan (2006), Dutta deliberately shot Abhishek's scenes in long, unbroken takes — sometimes 8 minutes straight. He told Abhishek to forget the camera and just react to Aishwarya Rai's eyes. That's why their Nawab-Ameeran scenes feel like a live play, not a film.
• Because of their LOC Kargil collaboration, Dutta later cast Abhishek's father Amitabh Bachchan in his 2005 war film Viruddh. Abhishek had recommended his dad for a small cameo, but Dutta expanded it into a full supporting role after seeing how the two Bachchans bounced off each other on set.
• During the grueling LOC Kargil shoot in Ladakh, Dutta and Abhishek shared a tent for 45 days. Dutta would wake him at 4 AM every day to rehearse the dialogue for the 'Yeh dil maange more' scene until Abhishek could deliver it with the exact exhaustion and defiance Dutta wanted.
• Abhishek once said about Dutta: 'He doesn't direct you. He creates a war zone or a 19th-century Lucknow and then just lets you live in it. I never felt like I was acting in his films — I felt like I was surviving.'
