• They first met on the set of Khandhar (1984), but neither was the first choice. Director Mrinal Sen originally wanted different actors for both roles. Annu Kapoor auditioned on a whim; Pankaj Kapur was a last-minute replacement after the original actor dropped out. Sen later said their casting was 'an accident that worked.'
• In Ek Ruka Hua Faisla (1986), they played jury members on opposite sides of a murder case. Pankaj Kapur set the pace with long, measured monologues. Annu Kapoor responded by breaking his own rhythm — he'd interrupt mid-sentence, stutter, then reset. The director, Basu Chatterjee, told them to keep doing that because it made the debate feel real.
• During the shoot of Susman (1987), both actors shared a tiny room in a remote Rajasthan village for three weeks. They had one fan, one mirror, and no phone. Annu Kapoor later recalled that they spent nights reading each other lines from the script, often laughing so hard they'd wake the crew.
• Pankaj Kapur once said about Annu Kapoor: 'He is the only actor who can make me forget my lines. Not because he distracts me — because he makes me listen so hard that I lose my own train of thought.' He said this in a 1990 interview with Filmfare.
• Their back-and-forth in Ek Ruka Hua Faisla (1986) directly inspired the courtroom-style debate format used in the TV show 'Aap Ki Adalat' (1993). The show's creator, Rajat Sharma, has said he watched that film multiple times to study how two people could argue without shouting.
