• For 'Arth' (1982), director Mahesh Bhatt originally wanted a more established star for the wife's role. Shabana Azmi personally pushed for Smita Patil, insisting that only she could match the raw intensity the part needed. Bhatt later admitted Azmi was right.
• In 'Mandi' (1983), Shabana and Smita played rival madams running competing brothels. Off-camera, they deliberately avoided each other between takes to keep the tension real. Director Shyam Benegal said they never once broke character during the entire shoot.

• In 'Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai' (1980), Shabana played a middle-class wife and Smita a working-class maid. They had no scenes together — but their characters' parallel struggles were edited to mirror each other. Director Saeed Akhtar Mirza said he cast them specifically to show two sides of the same coin.
