Trivia
- The film was originally titled 'Macbeth' but was changed to 'Maqbool' to avoid confusion with Shakespeare's play.
- Pankaj Kapur, who plays Abbaji, is the real-life father of actress Sanjana Kapoor, who plays his daughter in the film.
- The two policemen, played by Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah, were inspired by the witches in Macbeth but also by Rosencrantz and Guildenstern from Hamlet.
- Vishal Bhardwaj composed the film's music himself, including the song 'Rone Do', which was picturised on Tabu.
- The film was shot mostly in real locations in Mumbai, including the Byculla area, to create an authentic underworld feel.
- Irfan Khan, who plays Maqbool, was not the first choice; the role was initially offered to another actor who declined.
- The film did not perform well at the box office initially but later gained a cult following and critical acclaim.
