• Vishal Bhardwaj wrote Maqbool (2004) with Irrfan in mind for the lead, but Tabu was his first and only choice for Nimmi. She said yes before Irrfan even saw the script.
• On the set of Maqbool, Irrfan would deliberately underplay his lines in early takes, forcing Tabu to pull more emotion out of him. She later said he made her 'work harder' because he never gave the same performance twice.
• Their pairing in The Namesake (2007) directly led to Mira Nair casting both of them again in the same film — she said their 'unspoken rhythm' as a couple was so convincing that she wrote extra scenes for them.
