It narrates the story of Divya, a free-spirited college girl forced into an arranged marriage with Chandrakumar while still grieving her deceased lover Manohar. The film explores her inner conflict between holding onto her past and accepting her present. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil and was Mani Ratnam's breakthrough commercial success. Storyline
