• Karthik was a newcomer when Mani Ratnam cast him opposite Revathi in Mouna Ragam (1986). V. K. Ramasamy played the strict father. That film put both of them on the map — Karthik as a romantic lead, Ramasamy as the go-to 'father with a heart of gold'.
• In Varusham Padhinaaru (1989), Ramasamy played Karthik's grandfather. The entire emotional weight of the film rested on their scenes together — Ramasamy set a slow, dignified pace, and Karthik matched it by underplaying his reactions. No shouting, no melodrama. Just two actors trusting each other to hold the silence.
• Karthik has said in interviews that V. K. Ramasamy was like a father figure to him off-screen too. On the sets of Gopura Vasalile (1991), Ramasamy would personally make sure Karthik ate on time during long night shoots — something the junior actor never asked for.
