Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Kungumam (1963), almost didn't happen. Director A. P. Nagarajan was hesitant to cast Nagesh opposite Sivaji Ganesan because Nagesh was primarily a comedian. Sivaji personally insisted, saying Nagesh could handle the dramatic role.
• In Thiruvilaiyadal (1965), Nagesh played a mute devotee opposite Sivaji's Shiva. Nagesh had no dialogue for the entire film, so Sivaji would deliberately pause his lines to give Nagesh space to react with his eyes and body language — a rhythm they perfected over 32 films.
• Their comedy track in Thillaanaa Mohanambal (1968) — where Nagesh's character tries to impress Sivaji's character — became the template for the 'hero-comedian buddy duo' in Tamil cinema. Every major comedy actor after them, from Goundamani to Vadivelu, has cited this film as the blueprint.
• Off-screen, Sivaji was a mentor to Nagesh. When Nagesh faced financial trouble in the 1970s, Sivaji quietly paid off his debts and cast him in Vasantha Maligai (1972) just to give him steady work. Nagesh never spoke about it publicly.
• In Vietnam Veedu (1970), Sivaji played a blind man and Nagesh played his caretaker. Sivaji insisted Nagesh lead him around the set for real takes — no marks, no rehearsals. Nagesh had to physically guide him through every scene, which made their on-screen bond feel genuinely dependent.
