Trivia
- The film's title 'Thug Life' was inspired by a phrase popularised in 1990s hip-hop culture, marking a rare Western cultural reference in Mani Ratnam's filmography.
- Actor Kamal Haasan was initially considered for a pivotal role, but scheduling conflicts led to a different casting choice for the character of Sakthivel.
- Key action sequences were shot in the narrow, historic streets of George Town, Chennai, requiring complex permits and crowd control.
- The film's background score uses a traditional 'Thavil' drum in a modern, electronic mix to underscore the conflict between old loyalties and new betrayals.
- This is the first time in over a decade that composer A.R. Rahman and Mani Ratnam collaborated on a pure action-crime genre film.
- A subplot involving a political figure was reportedly trimmed after test screenings to maintain a tighter focus on the family drama.
- The young actor playing Amaran was selected from over 500 children during a nationwide talent search for a non-professional performer.
