• Their first film together, Idhaya Vaasal (1991), almost didn't happen. The director wanted a different actor for Sarath Kumar's role, but Vivek — then a struggling comedian — personally convinced the producer to cast Sarath, saying he had 'screen presence like a lion.'
• In Namma Annachi (1994), Vivek wrote most of his own dialogues on set. Sarath Kumar would deliberately pause mid-scene to let Vivek improvise, then react live. That's why their comedy scenes feel so natural — Sarath was literally catching Vivek's punches in real time.
• Vivek and Sarath Kumar were close friends off-screen. During the shoot of Oruvan (1999), they shared a room in a small lodge in Thenkasi for three weeks. Sarath later said Vivek would wake him up at 5 AM to practice comedy lines, even when they had no shoot that day.
• Their film Pennin Manathai Thottu (2000) launched a trend: the 'comedy sidekick with a heart' trope. Before this, Tamil comedians were mostly buffoons. Vivek's character in that film — a loyal friend who sacrifices his love for the hero — directly inspired similar roles in later films like Friends (2001) and Winner (2003).
• Sarath Kumar once said in a 2002 interview: 'Vivek is the only actor who can make me forget my lines because I'm laughing so hard. We had to reshoot the climax of Thenkasi Pattanam three times because I kept breaking character.'
• In 1977 (2009), their last film together, the director deliberately paired them as father and son — a first for the duo. Sarath played the stern patriarch, Vivek the rebellious son. The age gap (Sarath is 10 years older) finally became a plot point, not just a comedy contrast.
