Partnership facts

• Pandu and Ilavarasu first shared screen space in Sabhash (2000) because director R. K. Selvamani needed two actors who could play rival village chieftains with real physicality. Both were stage actors before films, and Selvamani cast them specifically for their ability to deliver dialogue without dubbing artists.
• In Shahjahan (2001), Pandu played the hero's elder brother while Ilavarasu played the villain. Their confrontation scene in the second half was shot in one continuous take because both actors refused to break character — they kept improvising insults at each other, and the crew just rolled camera.
• During the shoot of Marudhavelu (2011), Pandu and Ilavarasu shared a room in a small lodge near Tenkasi for 45 days. They cooked their own meals because neither trusted the local hotel food. Ilavarasu later said Pandu made the best rasam he ever had.
• Ilavarasu once told a magazine: 'Pandu and I never rehearsed. We would just look at each other and start the scene. That trust saved us in Sabhash because we had no time for retakes.'
• The success of their face-off in Shahjahan (2001) directly led to both being cast in the 2002 blockbuster 'Samurai' — but as different characters. The director of Samurai admitted he wrote the villain's henchmen roles specifically for Pandu and Ilavarasu after watching their Shahjahan scene.
