• Idichapuli Selvaraj was a popular comedy writer before he turned director. He cast Pandu as the lead in Purusha Lakshanam (1993) because he wanted a fresh face — not a star — to play a man pretending to be a woman. Pandu was a stage actor with zero film experience at that point.
• On the sets of Muthu (1995), Selvaraj let Pandu improvise most of his comic lines. Pandu’s natural timing turned a small supporting role into one of the film’s most quoted characters — especially the scene where he tries to teach Rajinikanth how to dance.
• Muthu’s massive success in Japan (1998) is often credited to Rajinikanth’s star power, but Japanese distributors specifically cited Pandu’s physical comedy as a reason they picked up the film. That single release opened the Japanese market for Tamil cinema.
• After Meendum Savithri (1996) bombed, Selvaraj stopped directing altogether. Pandu tried to get him to make another film for years, but Selvaraj refused. They never worked together again — not because of a fight, but because Selvaraj said he lost confidence in his own writing.
• Pandu once said in an interview: 'Selvaraj gave me my first break when no one else would. After Muthu, everyone wanted me. But he never asked for a single favour in return.'
