• They weren't supposed to be a pair. Director K. S. Ravikumar originally cast Goundamani alone for 'Pattukku Naan Adimai' (1990). Pandu was brought in last minute to fill a small role — and their back-and-forth was so electric that Ravikumar immediately wrote more scenes for them together.
• Goundamani set the pace with loud, machine-gun dialogue delivery. Pandu deliberately slowed down his responses — creating a rhythm where one exploded and the other absorbed. That push-pull made every scene feel like a ticking bomb.
• Their 1991 film 'Chinna Thambi' — despite a 3.7/10 rating — accidentally launched a trend. The scene where Pandu's character tries to teach Goundamani's character English became so famous that it spawned a wave of 'comedy English lessons' in Tamil films for the next decade.
• They never rehearsed. On every film from 'Nadigan' (1990) to 'Kunguma Pottu Gounder' (2001), they'd meet on set, read the lines once, then improvise the entire scene. Goundamani once said they trusted each other's instincts so much that a written script felt like a cage.
• "Pandu is the only actor who can make me laugh while I'm acting. He'd do something unexpected, and I'd break character — but the camera kept rolling, and that's what stayed in the final cut." — Goundamani, in a 2002 interview with Ananda Vikatan.
• In 'Ullathai Allitha' (1996), Pandu's character was written as a straight man. But on the third day of shooting, he started adding nervous stutters and awkward pauses. Goundamani immediately matched him by over-enunciating every word — turning a simple scene into a masterclass in comic timing.
