The Sreekanth & Jaishankar partnership

Between 1974 and 1979, they barely worked apart — 4 films in 5 years. From Idhayam Parkiradhu (1974) to Dhairyalakshmi (1979). The unfolded closed with Dhairyalakshmi in 1979.

It started with Idhayam Parkiradhu (1974).

The shape of the work

Sreekanth acted in every film; Jaishankar acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Director A. C. Tirulokchandar cast Sreekanth and Jaishankar together for the first time in 'Idhayam Parkiradhu' (1974) because he wanted two actors who could play brothers with contrasting temperaments — Sreekanth the quiet, intense one and Jaishankar the loud, impulsive one. He later said the pairing clicked so well he wrote 'Unnaithan Thambi' (1974) specifically for them within the same year.
  • On set, Jaishankar would deliberately overact in his first take so Sreekanth would get riled up and match his energy. Sreekanth, in turn, would underplay his lines to force Jaishankar to dial it down. The director let them fight it out — the final cut always had a weirdly perfect middle ground that neither could replicate alone.
  • Their third film 'Eduppar Kai Pillai' (1975) was the first Tamil movie to feature a double-role performance by a single actor (Sreekanth played twins), but the real ripple was that Jaishankar insisted on a scene where both brothers fight side-by-side — that fight sequence became a template for every 'brothers vs. villains' climax in Tamil B-movies for the next decade.
  • During the shoot of 'Dhairyalakshmi' (1979), Sreekanth's father passed away. Jaishankar quietly paid for the funeral and didn't tell anyone until a journalist spotted the receipt in his wallet years later. Sreekanth only found out when the article came out.
  • Jaishankar once told a fan magazine in 1980: 'Sreekanth is the only co-star who made me feel like I was acting in a play, not a film. He never gave me a cue — he gave me a reaction. That's harder to match than any dialogue.'
