• Panthulu was already a big name in Kannada cinema when he decided to make his Tamil debut with Kappalottiya Thamizhan (1961). He didn't just cast Gemini Ganesan — he bet the entire film on him, trusting Gemini to carry a biopic about freedom fighter V. O. Chidambaram Pillai. That film put both of them on the map in Tamil cinema.
• On the sets of Kappalottiya Thamizhan, Panthulu would block every scene with military precision — he was a stickler for discipline. Gemini, known for his easygoing charm, would deliberately loosen up the dialogue delivery in the middle of a take. Panthulu let him do it. That push-and-pull — Panthulu's structure vs Gemini's spontaneity — is what made their scenes crackle.
• Because of their partnership, Panthulu launched a young composer named M. S. Viswanathan on Kappalottiya Thamizhan. That film's soundtrack became MSV's breakthrough in Tamil cinema. Without Gemini and Panthulu teaming up, MSV might have taken much longer to become a legend.
• Gemini and Panthulu were close friends off-screen. When Panthulu fell seriously ill in the early 1970s, Gemini quietly stepped in to help finish School Master (1973) — even directing some portions uncredited. He never took public credit for it.
• Gemini once said about Panthulu: 'He was the only director who could make me rehearse. I hated rehearsals, but for him, I did it without complaint.' He said this in a 1980s interview with a Tamil magazine.
