The Jayaram & K. S. Ravikumar partnership

After 23 years apart, they came back together for Kara (2026). They didn't share a set between 2003 and 2026. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Purusha Lakshanam (1993) to Kara (2026). Their most recent film, Kara, came out in 2026 — the partnership is still active.

The shape of the work

The 2000s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Purusha Lakshanam; the 2020s to Kara. Jayaram acted in every film; K. S. Ravikumar directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Jayaram was already a Malayalam star when he signed Purusha Lakshanam (1993). K.S. Ravikumar, then a debutant director, had to convince the producer that a non-Tamil actor could pull off a Tamil comedy lead. Jayaram took a pay cut to prove himself.
  • On the sets of Thenali (2000), Ravikumar realized Jayaram’s strength was reactive comedy — so he wrote scenes where Jayaram’s character just stood still while Kamal Haasan’s manic energy bounced off him. That silence became Jayaram’s trademark in the film.
  • Panchathanthiram (2002) was originally written for a different actor. But after Thenali’s success, Ravikumar rewrote the entire second half to give Jayaram a parallel comic track. That film later inspired a generation of Tamil multi-starrer comedies like Vasool Raja MBBS.
  • During the shoot of Paarai (2003), Ravikumar’s father passed away. Jayaram quietly took over the director’s duties for three days, blocking shots and managing the crew, so Ravikumar could grieve without the production shutting down.
  • K.S. Ravikumar once said in an interview: 'Jayaram is the only actor who made me laugh so hard during a take that I had to hide behind the monitor. He doesn't act comedy — he lives it.'
