• They first worked together in 'Musafir' (1986) because Naseeruddin Shah personally recommended Rekha to director Umesh Mehra. He had just seen her in 'Utsav' and told Mehra she was the only one who could play the complex female lead.
• In 'Ijaazat' (1987), Naseeruddin Shah deliberately underplayed every scene opposite Rekha. He later said he did this because Rekha's emotional intensity was so overwhelming that any extra effort from him would have tipped the film into melodrama. He let her carry the grief, and he carried the guilt.
• During the shoot of 'Ijaazat', Rekha and Naseeruddin Shah would spend hours discussing their characters' backstories — things never written in the script. Director Gulzar let them do this because he felt their off-camera conversations gave the on-screen silences their weight.
• The only reason 'Krrish' (2006) has a scene where Rekha's character calls Naseeruddin Shah's character 'Doctor' with a trembling voice is because the director Rakesh Roshan saw their 'Ijaazat' chemistry and wrote that specific reunion moment as a callback to their older film.
• Naseeruddin Shah once said about Rekha: 'She has this terrifying ability to make you feel like you're the only person in the room — and also the most inadequate actor in the room.' He said this in a 2008 interview with Filmfare.
• In 'Mujhe Meri Biwi Se Bachaao' (2001), a comedy, Rekha and Naseeruddin Shah deliberately swapped their usual acting styles. She played the loud, chaotic wife with broad physical comedy, while he played the quiet, exasperated husband. Both said it was the most fun they ever had on set because they got to do each other's usual job.
