Partnership facts

• They first shared screen space in Janbaaz (1986), but the film was originally meant to pair Rekha with Feroz Khan. Anil Kapoor was cast as the younger brother, not her love interest. Their scenes together were an afterthought that the director expanded after seeing their test footage.
• In Insaaf Ki Awaaz (1986), Rekha played a mute woman. Anil Kapoor had to carry every conversation alone — no dialogue from her, just his reactions to her expressions. He later said that performing opposite a silent Rekha taught him how to act with his eyes.
• Between Janbaaz and Bulandi — a gap of 14 years — they never spoke. Rekha had reportedly stopped taking calls from Anil after a misunderstanding on set. They only reconciled when director K. C. Bokadia forced them into a room before Bulandi's shoot and locked the door.
• Anil Kapoor once said about Rekha: 'She doesn't act. She just stands there and the camera falls in love with her. I had to work twice as hard to not look like a fool next to her.' He said this in a 2001 interview promoting Lajja.
• Lajja (2001) was the only film where they played a married couple — and it was also the only one where Rekha's character died on screen. That death scene, where Anil's character breaks down, was later used as a reference by casting directors for 'grief audition' reels in the early 2000s.
