Partnership facts

• Jaishankar was already a star when he agreed to do Gaayathri (1977), but he insisted on casting R. Pattabiram as the villain. Pattabiram was a newcomer then, and Jaishankar personally vouched for him to the director.
• In Mela Thaalangal (1978), Jaishankar deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery to match Pattabiram's natural rhythm. Pattabiram later said that Jaishankar's patience made him look like a seasoned actor in their scenes together.
• During the shoot of Ithu Eppadi Irukku (1978), Jaishankar and Pattabiram shared a room in a small lodge in Tenkasi. They would rehearse their lines late into the night, often rewriting Pattabiram's dialogues to give him more screen time.
• Kuzhandhaiyai Thedi (1979) was the first Tamil film where a villain (Pattabiram) got a standalone comedy track with the hero (Jaishankar). That film's success directly inspired the 'comedy villain' trend in 80s Tamil cinema.
• Pattabiram once told a magazine: 'Jaishankar didn't treat me like a supporting actor. He made me feel like his co-star. In Mayandi, he even asked the cameraman to give me the close-up during our confrontation scene.'
• In Kizhakkum Merkum Sandhikkindrana (1979), the two actors improvised a 12-minute single-shot argument scene. Jaishankar would pause mid-sentence to let Pattabiram react, then pick up again — a technique neither used with other co-stars.
