• Suruli Rajan was a popular comedian when K. R. Vijaya was already a leading lady. Their first film together, Annai Abirami (1972), happened because the director needed a comic subplot that matched Vijaya's serious screen presence — and Suruli Rajan was the only one who could make her laugh between takes.
• In Sondham (1973), Vijaya would deliberately flub her lines in the middle of emotional scenes just to trigger Suruli Rajan's spontaneous one-liners. He'd then riff for two minutes straight, and the director kept those takes because the audience laughed harder at the real reactions.
