The Jaishankar & I. N. Moorthy partnership

Between 1969 and 1972, they barely worked apart — 5 films in 3 years. 1972 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. From Atthai Magal (1969) to Kathalikka Vanga (1972).

The spanned closed with Kathalikka Vanga in 1972. It started with Atthai Magal (1969).

The shape of the work

The 1970s account for 80% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Atthai Magal; the 1970s to Kannan Varuvan. Jaishankar acted in every film; I. N. Moorthy directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Jaishankar was already a star when he agreed to act in 'Atthai Magal' (1969) opposite newcomer I. N. Moorthy. Moorthy was so nervous on the first day of shoot that Jaishankar pulled him aside and said, 'Just look at me and say your lines. I'll cover you.' That scene made it to the final cut.
  • In 'Kannan Varuvan' (1970), Moorthy played a comic sidekick who kept interrupting Jaishankar's romantic scenes. Jaishankar deliberately slowed his own dialogue delivery to let Moorthy's punchlines land harder. Moorthy later admitted that Jaishankar's timing taught him how to milk a laugh without rushing.
  • Their 1972 film 'Delhi To Madras' was one of the first Tamil road movies. The success of that film directly inspired director S. P. Muthuraman to cast the duo again in a travel-comedy format, which later became a mini-genre in 1970s Tamil cinema.
  • During the shoot of 'Aseervatham' (1972), Jaishankar discovered that Moorthy couldn't swim. Without telling anyone, Jaishankar spent two evenings teaching him in a hotel pool. Moorthy never publicly thanked him, but he named his first son 'Jaishankar' — a fact that came out only in a 1990s interview.
  • I. N. Moorthy once said in a 1985 magazine interview: 'Jaishankar made me look good. He would deliberately miss his mark so the camera would stay on me a second longer. That's not acting — that's friendship.'
