The Thalaivasal Vijay & Revathi partnership

After 13 years apart, they came back together for Keni (2018). They didn't share a set between 2005 and 2018. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.

The work is uneven: Ponniyin Selvan (6.7) at one end, Maayan (1.0) at the other. From Thevar Magan (1992) to Keni (2018).

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Thevar Magan; the 2010s to Keni. Thalaivasal Vijay acted in every film; Revathi acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Revathi was the one who pushed for Thalaivasal Vijay to be cast in Thevar Magan (1992). She had worked with him before and told director Bharathan he'd bring the right weight to the role. Bharathan agreed after one look at his screen test.
  • In Maayan (2001), Revathi and Thalaivasal Vijay had to shoot a tense confrontation scene in a single take because the location had no backup lighting. Vijay later said Revathi's calm eye contact kept him from flubbing his lines. The scene made it to the final cut exactly as shot.
  • During the shoot of Gandhi Pirantha Mann (1995), Revathi and Thalaivasal Vijay would share a cup of filter coffee every morning before call time. They kept this ritual going for every film they did together after that, even when schedules were tight.
  • Keni (2018) was the only film in their six-film collaboration that became a commercial hit. Its success directly led to the director, K. S. Ravikumar, casting both of them again in his next project — a thriller that never got made because of budget issues.
  • Thalaivasal Vijay once told a magazine: 'Revathi doesn't act with you — she acts for you. In Vaanam Vasappadum (2004), I forgot my lines in one scene. She just kept looking at me with those eyes, and the words came back. That's the kind of partner she is.'
  • In Ponniyin Selvan (2005), Revathi and Thalaivasal Vijay played a married couple with a strained relationship. Vijay deliberately underplayed his anger in every scene, letting Revathi's silence carry the emotion. The director later said that choice made their scenes the most talked-about in the film.
