The Prabhu & R. V. Udayakumar partnership

After 31 years apart, they came back together for Rajaputhiran (2025). They didn't share a set between 1994 and 2025. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Urimai Geetham (1988) to Rajaputhiran (2025). Their most recent film, Rajaputhiran, came out in 2025 — the partnership is still active.

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Urimai Geetham; the 2020s to Rajaputhiran. Prabhu acted in every film; R. V. Udayakumar directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Prabhu was already a star when he agreed to do Urimai Geetham (1988) with debutant director R. V. Udayakumar. Udayakumar had no hit track record, but Prabhu liked the script so much he pushed the producer to greenlight it.
  • In Urudhi Mozhi (1990), Udayakumar wrote a role that let Prabhu play against his usual soft-hero image — a tough, no-nonsense village leader. Prabhu later said Udayakumar was the first director to make him act angry without shouting.
  • After Rajakumaran (1994) and Thalavanin Arulullam (1994) released back-to-back, the duo went silent for 31 years. They didn't fall out — Udayakumar just stopped directing. Prabhu called him in 2023 to ask if he had one more story left. That became Rajaputhiran (2025).
  • Prabhu told a Tamil magazine in 2025: 'Udayakumar doesn't write dialogues. He writes situations. I just have to stand there and the scene works.'
  • Rajaputhiran (2025) was shot in a single village set that Udayakumar built from scratch — the same location where Prabhu's father Sivaji Ganesan had shot a classic 1970s film. Prabhu insisted on the spot.
