• Prabhu and Ponnambalam first faced off in Kaliyugam (1988) because director Manivannan needed a towering, menacing villain to match Prabhu's raw energy. Ponnambalam was a bodybuilder-turned-actor with zero dialogue training — Manivannan bet the entire climax on their physical clash.
• In Vetri Vizha (1989), Ponnambalam refused to use a stunt double for the fight scene with Prabhu. He told the choreographer: 'If I don't feel his punch, the audience won't feel it.' They shot the 7-minute brawl in one take. The film became a hit.
• On the sets of Naangal (1992), Prabhu noticed Ponnambalam couldn't read Tamil cue cards. Every morning before shoot, Prabhu would sit with him for 20 minutes and read his lines aloud until Ponnambalam memorized them by sound. They never told the director.
• Their face-off in Periya Kudumbam (1995) was so intense that a young Vijay — then a struggling side actor — watched the rushes and told his father: 'I want to fight like Ponnambalam one day.' Vijay later cast Ponnambalam in three of his own films.
• Prabhu once said in a 2001 interview: 'Ponnambalam never acted like a villain. He acted like a man who had real reasons to hate me. That scared me more than any makeup or dialogue.'
• In Thirunelveli (2000), their last film together, Prabhu deliberately slowed his dialogue delivery to match Ponnambalam's halting Tamil. The director wanted to dub over Ponnambalam's voice. Prabhu refused: 'His roughness is the character.' The film got a 6.8 rating — their highest.
