• Ramanna was a producer-director who usually worked with big stars. He picked Vasu — then a relatively lesser-known actor — as the lead for 'Sorgam' (1970) because he wanted a fresh face for the film's spiritual theme. Vasu had to audition twice before Ramanna was convinced.
• On the sets of 'Maru Piravi' (1973), Ramanna would let Vasu rewrite his own dialogue in Tamil. Vasu had a knack for colloquial punchlines, and Ramanna trusted his ear over the scriptwriter's. That film's courtroom scene — where Vasu's character turns the judge's words around — was entirely Vasu's improvisation.
• The success of 'Vairam' (1974) directly led to Vasu being cast in K. Balachander's 'Apoorva Raagangal' the same year. Balachander saw Vasu's performance in 'Vairam' and said he wanted that same 'raw intensity' for his film. Without Ramanna's film, Vasu might never have crossed over into the parallel cinema wave.
• Ramanna and Vasu had a standing ritual: before every film's first day of shoot, they'd share a single cup of filter coffee at the same shop in Kodambakkam. Vasu later said that coffee was the only 'contract' they ever signed — no written agreements, just a handshake and that cup.
• Vasu once told a magazine: 'Ramanna sir never shouted at me. He'd just look at the floor and say, "M.R.R., you can do better." That silence was worse than any yelling. I'd go back and reshoot until he nodded.'
