Partnership facts

• Manohar and Jambulingam first teamed up for 'Uyirmel Asai' (1967) because Jambulingam, then a rising director, saw Manohar's raw intensity in a stage play and insisted he was the only actor who could play the conflicted lead. Manohar initially hesitated, fearing the role was too dark for his image.
• On the set of 'Nam Naadu' (1969), Jambulingam would deliberately give Manohar only half the dialogue before a scene, forcing him to improvise the rest. Manohar later admitted this made his performance feel more alive and unpredictable — a trick Jambulingam used on no other actor.
• Their third film together, 'Thiru Neellagandar' (1972), was the first Tamil film to feature a full-length devotional song sequence shot in a single take. That sequence became a template for later devotional films in the 1970s.
• During the shoot of 'Uyirmel Asai', Manohar and Jambulingam shared a small room in a lodge for three months because neither could afford separate accommodation. They wrote the climax together on a single notebook at 2 AM.
• Jambulingam once said about Manohar: 'He would argue with me about every scene, but after the argument, he'd deliver exactly what I wanted — only better. I never had to direct him twice.'
