• Muthuraman once said in a 1973 interview: 'Thirumugam never told me how to act. He just said, 'Be yourself.' That scared me more than any direction.'
• M. A. Thirumugam was a regular editor for Muthuraman's early films. He only turned director when Muthuraman pushed him to helm Maanavan (1970). That film became their first collaboration.
• On the sets of Penn Deivam (1970), Muthuraman would rewrite his own dialogues in the morning. Thirumugam never objected — he just adjusted the camera to follow whatever Muthuraman came up with. That loose style gave the film its natural feel.
• Thirumugam and Muthuraman shared a house in Madras during the making of Deivam (1972). They'd argue about scenes over dinner, then shoot them the next day without changing a word.
• Deivam (1972) was the first Tamil film to use a single-song flashback to explain an entire character's backstory. That trick was later copied by at least three other directors in the 1970s.
